Travel with the Nigerian Chaplaincy in the UK on this special pilgrimage led by Fr Michael Ogunyinka. We invite you to journey across the ancient heart of Spain, visiting many of the most popular shrines in the country. From the majestic cathedrals of Burgos and León to the sacred quiet of ávila’s walls and the holy destination of Santiago de Compostela; we will walk in the footsteps of saints. We will visit the iconic Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, renowned as the burial site of St. James. We will complete a small section of the Camino walk, to the Lighthouse of Finisterre, and therefore finishing the final section of the Way of St James. In Leon we visit the San Marcos former monastery and the ancient Basilica of San Isidoro, before moving onto Burgos, where we view the Cathedral of St Mary of Burgos. We will end our pilgrimage in Avila, the birthplace of St. Teresa. May this journey deepen our faith, renew our hope, and unite us in the spirit of pilgrimage - a sacred movement toward God, toward others, and toward the truest version of ourselves.

Day 2, Wednesday 7th October

Santiago de Compostela

After breakfast, we meet our local guide and leave our hotel for a guided tour. We view the iconic Santiago de Compostela Cathedral renowned as the burial site of St. James the Great and a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture. We view the beautiful Pórtico de la Gloria and sacred tomb of St. James lying beneath the high altar. After our tour, we will take part in the concelebrated Mass in the magnificent cathedral. Following Mass at this magnificent basilica, we will enjoy a walk around the Old Town steeped in medieval charm followed by lunch in a nearby restaurant. Free time for the remainder of the afternoon. Evening dinner at the hotel.

Day 3, Thursday 8th October

Santiago de Compostela - Muxia - Cape Finisterre - Santiago de Compostela

After breakfast we meet our local guide and coach driver and head westward to Muxia where we visit a beautiful church built along the coast, the Sanctuary of Our Lady A Barca. Mass here. Heading southward we arrive at Cape Finisterre, derived from the Latin finis terrae meaning end of the earth. As per tradition, many pilgrims extend their Camino walk here as the final destination, after visiting the shrine of the apostle St. James. We will stop in Fisterra for lunch and some free time to explore before continuing south to the Lighthouse of Finisterre to complete the Way of St. James. Return to our hotel in Santiago de Compostella for dinner.

Day 4, Friday 9th October

Santiago de Compostela - Leon

After breakfast we check-out and meet our coach driver and head towards Leon where we meet our local tour guide (3.5-hour drive). In the Middles Ages, the city became a historic enclave on the pilgrim’s road to Santigo de Compostela. Upon arrival we have a guided tour of the beautiful city. We visit the San Marcos former monastery, which is now a hotel visited by many pilgrims. We also tour the ancient Basilica of San Isidoro. The original church was built by King Alfonso the 5th and was devoted to St John the Baptist. The church was later rebuilt in stone, Romanesque style, by King Fernando the 1st and the Queen Sancha under the patronage of Saint Isidoro, whose remains arrived in 1063. Mass here followed by free time for lunch and/or personal devotion. Free time for the rest of the afternoon in Leon. Proceed to our hotel in Leon and check in followed by evening dinner.

Day 5, Saturday 10th October

Leon - Burgos - Avila

After breakfast, we check out of the hotel and meet our coach driver and head towards Burgos where we meet our local tour guide (1.5-hour drive). Upon arrival we have a guided tour of the magnificent Cathedral of Saint Mary of Burgos, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in October 1984. Proceed to our hotel in Avila (2.5-3-hour drive) and check in followed by evening dinner.

After breakfast we meet our tour guide and have a guided tour in Avila, the birthplace of St. Teresa. We will visit the Convent de la Santa (which was built over the site of her birthplace) and the Convent of St Joseph (this convent of Discalced Carmelites was dedicated to St Joseph because Teresa had a great devotion to him).
